When an area 20 miles south of what is now Baton Rouge was placed under United States control as a part of the Louisiana Purchase, a group of settlers wanted to remain on Spanish soil. They moved to Baton Rouge and became a city within a city. Because the Spanish Towners were culturally different from their neighbors, they came up with a mascot to represent their uniqueness. That mascot is the Pink Flamingo. Today, Spanish Town is home to the largest Mardi Gras parade in Baton Rouge.
